El joven escritor Calvin Weir-Fields, en el pasado un literato prestigioso, está teniendo problemas para hacer su siguiente novela. Después de un consejo de su terapeuta, Calvin utiliza una vieja máquina de escribir y crea a una vivaz mujer a la que llama Ruby Sparks. Ruby salta de la página a la casa de Calvin, adoptando la forma de una mujer real de carne y hueso. Ella no entiende que es un personaje ficticio y que sus acciones y sentimientos son dictados por lo que Calvin escribe.
